Art thoughts:
I believe that design is a form of communication that is essential to the timeline of human experience and the cultural and social development of our kind.
Art as communication is woven through birth, growth, emotion, aspirations, conflict, and mortality. This idea motivates the creation of my work to express how our lived experiences are tied together through symbols, forms, and the universal consciousness and is best received through simplicity. Artists like Keith Harring and designer Tibor Kalman have explored the concept of communication by way of clarity and minimalism, creating a widely accepted shared understanding of experiences and meaning. My personal understanding of this has become clearer through my career as a graphic designer, as it allows knowledge, thought, opinion, and consciousness to be universally shared and processed through iconography, symbols, and imagery. Through this process, I have found that the boundaries between art and design can be blurry, and it can be difficult to distinguish the difference between the two. When does design end and art begin? Even the terms in art and design are used interchangeably and tend to occur or co-exist from and in similar places. Through my interdisciplinary art practice and graphic design, I often explore the boundaries that exist and disappear between the two seemingly separate modes of expression to ignite human interaction, particularly within the urban landscape.
